The sticker price on a pedal-assist bicycle is the one number every shop will tell you without being asked, and it is also the number that matters least once the bike is in your garage. Everything after that arrives in small installments: a chain here, a set of pads there, a shop visit in March, a battery in year six. None of it is dramatic on its own. Added up across five or six years of real riding, it usually lands somewhere between a monthly transit pass and a very cheap car payment, and the spread between those two outcomes is mostly decided by choices made before purchase.

1. Service intervals, and why the first year is front-loaded

Most shops will suggest a check somewhere in the first hundred miles, because cables stretch, spokes settle, and bolts that were torqued on a stand behave differently under a rider carrying groceries. After that, a reasonable rhythm is a full service annually and a lighter one at the halfway point if you ride through winter. The careful reader asks two questions at the counter: what the shop's hourly labor rate is, and whether they are trained on this motor system. A shop that cannot pull diagnostic codes for your drive unit will send the bike somewhere that can, and that transit is billed to you.

2. Chains, cassettes, and pads under a motor's torque

A mid-drive motor puts its output through the same chain and cogs your legs use, which is why mid-drive chains stretch faster than the ones on an unassisted bike ridden the same distance. Hub motors sidestep that entirely, and their drivetrains wear at ordinary bicycle rates. Either way, the compensating habit is cheap: a chain checker costs a few dollars, and replacing a stretched chain before it chews the cassette turns a three-figure repair into a two-figure one. Brake pads go the same way. A heavier bike carrying more speed asks more of the pads, so budget for pads more often than you would on a road bike, and inspect rotors for scoring whenever the pads come out.

3. The battery, which is the real second purchase

A lithium pack is a consumable with a long fuse. Manufacturers generally rate cells to a number of full charge cycles before capacity drops to roughly eighty percent, and for most commuters that arrives somewhere in the range of four to eight years depending on mileage, heat, and how the pack is stored. Replacement is the single largest post-purchase line item, often a meaningful fraction of the original bike price. Two checks pay for themselves here: confirm the pack is still cataloged as a serviceable part for your model, and ask whether a third-party rebuild is possible if it is not. Storing the bike indoors, at partial charge, in the cold months, measurably extends the fuse.

4. Electricity, insurance, and the small print on both

Charging is the cheapest thing about the bike by a wide margin. A pack's capacity in watt-hours, divided by a thousand, multiplied by your utility's rate per kilowatt-hour, gives the cost of a full charge, and for most riders that is pennies. The Department of Energy is the federal body responsible for tracking residential electricity, and your own bill carries the rate you should be using. Insurance is the line people forget. Homeowners or renters policies sometimes cover a bicycle only up to a low per-item cap, and some carriers treat a motorized bicycle as a separate class, so read the personal property schedule and ask the agent in writing whether a scheduled rider is needed.

5. Locks, and the arrangement that actually holds

Theft patterns are consistent enough that the counter-measures are boring: a hardened U-lock through the rear triangle and a fixed object, a secondary cable or chain for the front wheel, and a removable battery that comes inside with you. Independent lock ratings, published by testing houses rather than by the lock makers, are the thing to check before spending, because a bike worth several thousand dollars deserves a lock rated for that value. Locking indoors beats every lock. A garage anchor bolted into concrete costs less than a single deductible and turns opportunistic theft into work no one bothers with.
